Story behind the Story:
Both SunJae and Mie Smith are the children of Japanese/American marriages. When they decided to embark on the romantic comedy genre, it was natural to reflect on how culture and faith affects the process of choosing a mate.
Having spent time living in Japan as a child, Mie knows some of the difficulties that Christians have faced in that nation. Growing up on a West Virginia farm, Sun Jae has long wanted to introduce moviegoers to the true beauty of his home state.
“Ai means Love” juxtaposes two wildly different cultures—and yet brings out the underlying common currents that enable both to develop respect and honor for each other.
A wry appreciation of both cultures permeates this tale of love that overcomes all.
